There are many things in the Word that we can understand but there are some things that are harder to explain. I want to talk about one of them today. You may have read about this man but you were baffled about what was going on and who the man was or where he came from.
This man is mentioned in only one book of the Bible and that book is the Gospel of Mark. This man is only mentioned in two verses in the whole Bible that I know of, and they are in Mark 14:51-52 which says, “And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: and he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.” (KJV) Mark doesn’t mention the man’s name because he may not have known what it was.
Tradition says it was Mark, the writer of the book, but from what I have read that is very unlikely. The reason some people think it was Mark is that they think when Mark heard about Jesus’ arrest in the garden of Gethsemane he jumped out of bed wearing only a linen cloth and ran to the garden but I read that was impossible because of the distance he would have had to run. Some people think that this man was the apostle John, but why would he be naked roaming around in the garden?
I wrote a blog a few days ago about the Resurrection of Christ and how there was so much power there at the time, it even caused some people to come out of their graves, if you read it you may remember. Think of this, the garden was situated on the side of the Mount of Olives where there were many graves. The linen cloth that this man was wearing was only mentioned one other time in the New Testament and that was when Jesus was buried wearing a linen cloth.
From what it says in John 18:3-6, “Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.”
There was a lot of power in the garden that night also; one of the graves may have been disturbed and this young man came out of his grave and wanted to see Jesus, the Man that resurrected him. In the process the men tried to grab him and he left his linen cloth and fled naked from the garden.
I got this information from my Greek devotional called ‘Sparkling Gems’ written by Pastor Rick Renner. I thought this was interesting so I thought I would pass it on. It is something to think about. Have a great day and may God bless you and yours!!
