Treasure

“Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  This verse is found in Matthew 6:21.  What is this really talking about?  The main thing this verse is talking about is your money.  How you spend your money and what you do with it tells people a lot about you.  Money seems to be the heartbeat of America, trying to get it and to fulfill the American dream is what is on the mind of many people.

We also live in a very materialistic society.  We have a tendency to try to keep up with the Jones’ so to speak, or you might say to keep up with your neighbors, sometimes not just to keep up, but to outdo them, if possible. Believers and non-believers alike find it hard to be content with what they have so they are always seeking ways to have more things, either for themselves or their kids, to the point of many people having an unsatisfied appetite that seems never to be quenched, regardless of how much they have.

This reminds me of hoarders, who keep buying things to the point that they have to walk on things to get around inside their house, or they make a little path to walk from one room to the other.  When it becomes that bad it has become a sickness and many people have a form of it.

As I am typing this, I will confess that I have much more than I need also.  My problem isn’t so much that I want all the stuff that I have, but I find it very hard to pass up a real good deal when I come across one, and I seem to run across a lot of good deals.  Did you ever hear the old saying, “This is too good a deal to pass up?”  Well, that’s my problem.  You might say that I am a ‘picker’ like the ones on TV.  My purpose is not to hoard, but you might say to redistribute.

Now let me pick on believers, if you say you love God and your church but give only a few dollars when the offering plate is passed, what are you really saying to the Lord about Him and His body?  You are saying just the opposite of what you are doing, especially if you have money that you plan to use to buy more materialistic things.

I will be very frank in saying that if you can pay your tithes but you refuse to, then the Lord is not your treasure, your money and your possessions are.  If you are unable to pay them that is a different story, in that case you can ask the Lord to prosper you so that you can pay your tithes.  If you love the Lord and the church, you will show it by the way you support it with your finances, if you can.

The Bible says this in the same chapter in verses 19-20, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.”

When you pay your tithes and offerings, it shows where your priorities are and who you really love.  It also says this in verse 24, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

It also says in 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

You can always tell what you love by what you think the most about. Enough said, this is something to think about, God bless and have a great day!!
