Dissimulation

In Romans 12:9 it says this in the KJV Bible, “Let love be without dissimulation.  Abhor that which is evil cleave to that which is good.”  Do you know what this word dissimulation means?

Most people probably don’t have any idea what it means because it is very rare to hear it used today, but it is happening often in our society especially when we hear the word love used.  Have you ever been misled by someone that you thought was your friend, someone that told you that they loved you just so they could take advantage of you?  Have you ever confided in someone, sharing your secrets and most intimate thoughts and feelings, just to find out that person betrayed you by talking behind your back?

If you are a believer, thinking about the word love, the word agape might come to mind because that is the kind of love God has for us.  God’s love for us is incomparable to anyone else’s love.  Whether you are a believer or not you may have heard of John 3:16 which says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”  God’s love was an unconditional love, not the kind that embodies just talk but also actions.

God’s desire was to change man into His own image and likeness, more and more, even to the point of sacrificing His only begotten Son on our behalf and transforming us into His sons and daughters, praise His holy Name!  And if we are born-again that is exactly who we are and that is something to get excited about, praise the Lord.  It says in 1st John 3:1-3, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are!  The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known.  But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.”

This is the kind of love God has for us not just loving in word but also in deed, in other words He expressed His love by His actions not just saying that He loved us.  This is the kind of love every believer must have, not a shallow love that says I love you for what I can get from you or what you can do for me.  Agape love says I love you just the way you are and not for any other reason.

Dissimulation means a whole different kind of love that is not love at all.  It is phony, the act of deceiving, faking something for your benefit, and also the use of tricks to deceive someone.  It is a deceitful attitude that is not straightforward, and is the act of taking in as by fooling, cheating or  swindling someone.  I feel like this is the kind of love I experience most of the time, to be frank and honest.  What about you have you experienced this kind of so called love too?

The love God wants us to express is agape love, a love that proves itself by its acts of righteousness, the kind of brotherly love that blesses those that persecute you and repays good for evil, that rejoices with those that rejoice and weeps with those who weep.  One that distributes to the saints who are in need!

What about you, have you indulged in dissimulation telling someone you loved them just for your benefit?  If you have, repent and tell the Lord you are sorry and ask Him to help you not to fall into this sin again, then ask Him to help you love with a sincere love.  When you pray that kind of prayer you are praying God’s will for your life and He will help you.  And don’t forget to forgive anyone that has treated you the same way. Then you will be set free, praise the Lord.  God bless you and have a great day!!
