Have you been baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire, like
John talked about in Matthew 3:11? Has the
fire of the Spirit been applied to your life and is the sinful chaff being
burned up in your life? Are you crucifying
the flesh daily and are you filled with the Holy Spirit and power and overflowing
with the living water that Jesus spoke of to the Samaritan woman about? Do you speak in other tongues as they did on
the day of Pentecost?
It talks about speaking in other tongues in Acts 2:1-4, “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come,
they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where
they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and
one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
These speakers spoke in languages they didn’t understand but
those they were speaking to understood, because they heard the speakers speaking
in their own languages, which amazed them and they marveled.
It tells us that there were many people present that day from
all over, read Acts 2:7-11, “Then they
were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, ‘Look, are not all these
who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in
which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in
Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews
and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the
wonderful works of God.’”
They were speaking in other languages the wonderful works of
God which tells us what the ‘speaking in tongues’ is. But sad to say there were also mockers who
scoffed in that day because they didn’t understand, just like there are today, jeering
at the testimony that was given through the Holy Spirit. They accused these men of being filled with
new wine, accusing them of being drunk (intoxicated). It seems that some were amazed and some mocked
which still continues to this day.
The disciples were believers before the day of Pentecost and
this wasn’t the first time that ten of Jesus’ disciples received the Holy
Spirit, read what it says in John 20:19-22 “Then,
the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were
shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and
stood in the midst, and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ When He had said
this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when
they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace to you! As the Father
has sent Me, I also send you.’ And when He had said this, He breathed on them,
and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”
What Jesus did at Calvary will now make it possible for them
and all believers to receive, or be baptized in the Holy Spirit, praise the
Lord!! Read what it says in Acts 19:1-6,
“And it happened, while Apollos was at
Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus.
And finding some disciples he said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you believed?’
So they said to him, ‘We
have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.’
And he said to them, ‘Into
what then were you baptized?’
So they said, ‘Into
John’s baptism.’
Then Paul said, ‘John
indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they
should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.’
When they heard this,
they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands
on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and
prophesied.”
These men were believers and were baptized in the Lord Jesus
then Paul laid his hands on them and the Holy Spirit came on them and they
spoke with tongues and prophesied. When
Philip went down to Samaria many people accepted the Word and were baptized, then
Peter and John were sent to them and laying their hands on them they received the
Holy Spirit.
Read Acts 8:5-17, “Then
Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the
multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and
seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud
voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and
lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.
But there was a
certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and
astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom
they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, ‘This man is the
great power of God.’ And they heeded him because he had astonished them with
his sorceries for a long time. But when they believed Philip as he preached the
things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and
women were baptized. Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized
he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which
were done.
Now when the apostles
who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they
sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that
they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them.
They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands
on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.”
There are other places in God’s Word that speak of this
subject and some people may never hear about this from the pulpit, so if you want
to know more about this don’t just take my word for it, do an in depth study on
it, it will be well worth your time. Something to think about! May the good Lord bless you and yours and may
you have a super day!!
