Samson’s Downfall

Samson was a man of great strength, probably the strongest man that ever lived.  He was a Nazarite from birth and was to be an instrument that God would use to start the deliverance of God’s people from the Philistines who ruled over them. When the Spirit of God would come upon him he would be able to perform great feats.  In Samson’s day the Spirit of the Lord would come upon people and empower them, then in the New Testament the Spirit of God resided within born-again believers and empowered them to do mighty things for the Kingdom.

Samson had some problems, one was he didn’t seem to possess a lot of discernment, confiding in the wrong people, plus he had an excessive devotion to sensuality and he wasn’t wise in how he used his gifts and talents.  If Samson had more control he could have achieved so much more for the Lord.

I think Christians have some of these same problems today.  Instead of resisting the lust of the flesh, Samson allowed himself to be ruled by the flesh.  When we allow the flesh to rule our lives we will bring on ourselves all kinds of problems.  Samson also violated his vow and God’s laws; that is what takes place when we let the flesh take over and not control it.  When I think about how Samson allowed his wife to deceive him by telling her people the answer to his riddle and then how he allowed Delilah to deceive him also, it is clear that he had very little discernment and was allowing his flesh to control his thinking.

He had so much potential and wasted it on fleshly lust and desires.   In 1 John 2:16-17 it says, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”  Because of this terrible problem Samson gave away the secret of why he was so strong and he lost his strength and also his eyes because the Philistines subdued him capturing him and then using him to grind for them.

But the worst part of this story was that the Lord had left him.  It says this in Judges 16:20, 21, “She said, ‘The Philistines are upon you, Samson!’  And he awoke from his sleep and said, ‘I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.’  But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him. Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze chains, and he was a grinder in the prison.”  There are always consequences for sin and sin separates us from the Lord.  This is still true today because the Lord hates sin just as much as He always has.

If you find yourself yielding to the flesh and its cravings you will end up separated from the Lord also and everything you try to accomplish will be hindered.  So learn a lesson from Samson and don’t let yourself be controlled by the flesh, take control and walk in the Spirit and you will not yield to fleshly desires.  Admit your sin, confess, repent and ask for forgiveness and start honoring the Lord once again, then you will be able to accomplish whatever the Lord’s plan is in your life, praise the Lord.

God bless and have a great day.  And don’t forget to thank and praise the Lord!!
