Have You Been Broken

Have you ever wept over your sins and truly found yourself remorseful because of the sins you have committed?  I think this is one of the keys to finding real peace and joy in your life.  The Lord looks for the humble and contrite heart, this is something that He will not despise.

The Bible says in James 4:6–10, “But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, ‘God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’  Submit therefore to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

I think this is so important in every believer’s life.  Have you ever been so miserable over your sins that you were broken to the point of weeping and mourning over them?  I have seen many respond to altar calls but I have seen very few people weeping over their sins.  Many altar calls don’t even include sin at all, all it amounts to is receiving Jesus into your life.

Weeping over sins reminds me of Peter when he denied the Lord three times, Peter had committed a terrible sin and this is what it says in Matthew 26:75, “And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, ‘Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.”  Peter was broken over his sin, so broken he wept bitterly which shows that he was truly sorry and the result was that he was forgiven, praise the Lord.

We should never be ashamed to express deep sorrow by weeping over our sins.  Tears seem to have a cleansing effect on us, if done out of godly sorrow.  2 Corinthians 7:10 says, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” (NIV1984)  But it is only through the blood of Jesus that we can ever be cleansed of our sins and purified from all unrighteousness.

Like I said at the top of the page being remorseful and weeping over your sins is the real key to peace and joy.  The reason I say this is that godly repentance will always result in God’s forgiveness and restoration.  When someone expresses heartfelt sorrow it gets the Lord’s attention because He seeks the humble, contrite and repentant heart.    If you ever really get ahold of what it cost Jesus to buy your pardon, the pain and suffering He endured before and while he was being crucified, I think it would bring godly tears to your eyes and cause you to weep over your sins.

Think about someone you love, if they were hurt very badly would it bring tears to your eyes?  Now think about Jesus, if you love Him, He suffered as much or more than anyone else has and why did He suffer, because of our sins.  My sin and yours are what put Him on that cross, so if that isn’t enough to break and humble you and bring you to tears over your sins, I don’t know what will.

Something to think about and I hope you will.  God bless and have a great day!
