A Lie

How many times do we say things that are not true or are what you might call half-truths?  In our society it seems like lying is an acceptable practice and goes on all the time.  I doubt if there is anyone that can say they have never told a lie in their lifetime.  I figure that many people, if asked, would say that lying is just a way of life and everyone is doing it so why worry about it.  I know a man that seems to be a chronic liar because you can’t believe much of what he says since he lies so often.  This is a tragic situation because no one can trust a person that lies so often, or a person who doesn’t lie continually but still lies.  What about a person that over exaggerates, or tells half-truths, can you trust them, isn’t that the same thing as lying?  Lying is something that builds distrust in people and is something we should try to avoid in our lives.  When you tell a lie to someone, how many other people do you think hear that same lie and believe it besides the person you tell it to?  I heard a quote from Winston Churchill last night, read it and see what you think about it, “A lie gets halfway around the world before truth has a chance to get its pants on.”

It is very true, lies seem to spread like wild fire depending on who says them, like a celebrity or a politician or someone who is famous in our society, but all lies get spread over time and can hurt people and in some cases even kill them.    Why do I say this so strongly?  Because all sin leads to death and God’s Word says this in Proverbs 6:16-19, “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”

Now read what it says in Proverbs 12:19, “The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.”  And verse 22, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

Here is an example of how judgement came as a result of two people lying in the New Testament, read Acts 5:1-11, "But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things."

I think if we had that kind of fear today things would be a whole lot different in the church!!  This is a very bad habit to get into because lying is a sin in God’s eyes and is punishable by death.  Now read Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Enough said, if you are a Christian, by that I mean born-again which is the only way you can be a true believer, and you are in the habit of lying and are trying to please God, and you are praying and even fasting about it, but are still having problems with it, maybe you need to attend a faith based recovery class in the church that you attend, or another church if yours doesn’t have one, and seek help for the problem you have.  You didn’t get into the habit overnight and it may take a while to get over it, but don’t give up or give into the lies that the enemy is trying to tell you, like you will never be free of the bondage you are in, because he is a liar and the father of all lies.  Remember there is nothing impossible with God, so do not give up or fall for the lies of the enemy of your soul!!

Something to think about!  May the good Lord bless you and yours with His perfect peace, love and joy and may you have a super day and don’t forget to thank and praise the Lord for He is so worthy!!
