I have a song on one of my CD’s called, “The Rumor Mill” and
I thought I would talk on this subject today. I think most of us have been involved in this
sin at one time or other. I know I have
been guilty of this sin and I am very sorry about what I said and I have had to
repent and ask the Lord to forgive me for the things I said even if most of
what I said was true.
I used to think if I told the truth about someone it was ok
but I found out I was wrong. You may be
telling the truth about someone, but if your attitude is wrong then you are
hurting that person’s character in other people’s eyes. When you say negative things about people to
others, making fun of them and laughing at them at their expense, whether true
or not, every time they see the person you talked negatively about, what you
said will probably come to their mind and they may judge that person by what
they heard.
The big problem with gossip is that you can never fully
right the wrongs you have committed against that person. You can repent and ask the Lord to forgive you
and He will, but the consequences of gossip seem to go on and on. There are many people that seem to thrive on
gossip, not seeming to realize that they will reap what they sow. For many people gossip and rumors are like a
tasty morsel, and they are always looking for more things to talk about so they
can make fun of people and laugh at them. It is like they love to shovel dirt at the ‘rumor
mill’ regardless of what the cost may be.
I said earlier in this Tidbit that you can never right the
wrong when you gossip because little by little the more people that hear about
what you said will repeat it, but when they repeat it they will more than likely
add things to what was said until the whole thing gets so blown out of
proportion that it can never be taken back completely and so much more damage
will be done. I heard, or read, a story
about a lady years ago that related to this topic so I will give you my version
of the story. There was a lady that was
convicted of the sin of gossiping and she didn’t know what to do about it so she
went to her pastor and asked him what she should do. He told her to take a pillowcase, fill it
with feathers, go to the top of the Empire State Building and throw them over
the side. So she did and it was a very
windy day. After she was done she went
back to the pastor and told him what she had done. Then the pastor told her to take the pillowcase
back to the Empire State Building and pick up all the feathers, which was an
impossible task and so is trying to right the words of a gossip. Gossiping and laughing and making fun of
people may be fun at times, if that is how you get your kicks, but the
consequences can be very tragic.
This may be a stretch, but in 2 Kings 2:23-24 there is a
story about some boys that were making fun of and mocking Elisha the Prophet calling
him a baldhead. This is what the Word says about that incident, “Then he went up from there to Bethel; and
as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and
said to him, ‘Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!’ So he turned around
and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And
two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.”
Many of us can praise and thank God for His mercy and grace
because we have also been in this situation, gossiping and making fun of people
and some of them were men of God, like Elijah was. Thank the Lord we live in the day of grace,
but make no mistake about it, there are consequences for sin even today because
God doesn’t wink at sin, He still hates it and so should we. Question, are you caught up in this sin? If so repent and confess it, ask the Lord to
forgive you and try your best to never do it again. Don’t put it off, act on what you have read. I have given you something to think about, you
will have to do what you think is best at this point; I hope you do the right
thing. May the Lord bless you and yours and
may you have a super day!!
