God’s Mercy and Grace

It is important that we never forget God’s mercy, grace and unconditional love in our lives and never take them for granted.  I wrote a blog not too long ago about our righteousness and how we obtained it.  Today I want to write about our attitude after we have been covered by the righteousness of Christ.

When the Lord does something in our lives, like answering prayer or whatever He might do with us, don’t look at it as being done because of your righteousness.  If you do, you might fall into spiritual pride.  It is true that when you are born again you are covered by Christ’s righteousness, praise the Lord for it.  But be very careful of your attitude, that you don’t take the credit for the works the Lord may accomplish in your life as being done because of your righteousness.  It is only because of the Lord’s mercy and grace that He has decided to use you.

It is easy to think that if you have done a good deed the Lord has to repay you for that deed somehow.  The Word does say that you will reap what you sow, that is true but what about the motive behind what you did, was it what it should have been?  The Lord doesn’t have to do anything whatsoever, He does whatever He chooses to do because of his mercy and grace and we need to acknowledge that fact.

Don’t forget, as the Lord’s children we should be compelled to do good works and serve Him with an appreciation as a good servant.  Check out what Luke 17:7-10 says “Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down to eat’? But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”

It is easy to think because we are believers we deserve something from God which can lead us into spiritual pride, what we need to do is to look at the works we do as a privilege and not as a means of gain.  If we received what we deserved we would still be lost in our sin and separated from the Lord with no hope.  Don’t let the flesh rise up within you and cause you to think that the Lord is unfair because you may not have been rewarded here the way you think that you should have been.  The Lord will reward you for whatever you have done with the right attitude, giving Him all the glory.

Sometimes the Lord’s rewards or blessings may come in what I will call a disguise.  Think of the times you have been kept from a car accident or an illness.  Or being robbed or taken advantage of in some way.  There are many ways that the Lord keeps us from harm that we don’t even know about.  How many times has the Lord helped you to make good decisions that kept you from disaster and harm?  There are many times we are blessed and we don’t even realize that they happened.  That is why I call them blessings in disguise.  All these things happen because of God’s mercy, grace and unconditional love, praise the Lord!

There is another thing we need to be careful of and that is taking God’s mercy, grace and unconditional love for granted.  We need to have a heart of praise and thanksgiving.  The Lord knows our motive and the real reason we serve Him, let’s be careful to serve Him with pure motives and He will certainly reward and bless us.  God bless you and yours and have a great day.
