Putting Your Foot in Your Mouth

Have you ever head this saying, “He, or she, put their foot in their mouth,” which basically means that that person said something that they didn’t think about ahead of time.  Peter and Jesus’ disciples seemed to fall into this category and I wonder how many of us fall into this same category at times, saying one thing and ending up doing something different.  Did you ever say that you would do anything that Jesus wanted you to do or go wherever He wanted you to go?  Or maybe this, to say whatever He wanted you to say and when the time came you didn’t keep your word?  Some people say this also, I would never deny the Lord no matter what I have to go through even if I have to die for Him, and many other things; but I think that it is better to not say one way or the other but wait until the time comes when you may have to make these choices.

Read what Jesus said to Peter and also the disciples that were there at the time when he made this bold statement.  Read Mark 14:26-31, “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.”

Some things are very easy to say but not so easy to do when the time comes, if it does.  Peter ended up denying the Lord three times and all the disciples all scattered when Jesus could have used their support.  And think of this, many of the disciples walked with Him and talked with Him face to face and saw the miracles that He performed, even raising Lazarus from the dead, and he wasn’t the only one that He raised from the dead.  They even experienced the time in the boat when the winds and waves obeyed Him.

I want you to know this is not a rebuke or something to discourage anyone, but to get you thinking about the words you say, because God hears.  There are people that have been tested, or you might even say they were refined in the fire, and are not walking with the Lord anymore; and some of them are atheists today, teaching against the God they once served and making a mockery of the things that they held to be true.  So, this is just a reminder to think before you speak so that you don’t end up like some of them.

A good example of standing strong in testings was Job, and there are many more good examples in the Word.  Read what Job said in Job 13:1-16, “Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it. What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you. Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom. Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips. Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him? Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God? Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him? He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons. Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you? Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay. Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will. Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand? Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.”

Job was determined to wait upon the Lord even if He slayed him and this kind of thinking is what we should follow, or many of the other positive examples I could give.  So instead of us blurting out what we will do, let our actions show what we will do.  I have heard it said that actions speak louder than words.

I have given you something to think about.  I hope this has been an encouragement to you and may you have a super day and may the good Lord bless you and yours!!  PS don’t forget to thank and praise the Lord!!
