The Squeaky Wheel Gets The Grease

Have you ever heard this statement before, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease?”

What does this statement mean?  Question: when was the last time you received something you really wanted without asking someone for it?

Things like that don’t normally happen unless we express our want or need to someone.  I am not saying that it never happens, because it does at times.

Think of this, sometimes you receive a raise because you perform a job well.  In this case you may not have asked for a raise verbally but your performance spoke volumes to your employer and they acted on that.  Many times your actions speak much louder than words.

Let me give you some other examples of this.  If a person walks up to you with a sad look on his or her face, what are they telling you?  They are sad.  It is like they are speaking to you but they haven’t said anything. The same thing happens when a person is happy or angry.  Their facial features speak volumes to you.  When this happens you will react in one way or another.  That action is like the grease being applied to these people’s lives.

Even thou these things may apply to the squeaky wheel getting the grease,  usually what is meant by this statement is speaking it out with your mouth.

Let me give you an example.  Have you ever argued a point of view with someone or complained many times to someone about something?  Did you win that person over to your point of view or did you get satisfaction because you complained long enough?  That is like saying the squeaky wheel got the grease.

Have you ever gone to a grocery store and pushed a cart that had a squeaky wheel on it?  Didn’t it start to aggravate you before long?  If enough people complain about that cart, it will probably get the wheel greased up and it will be much quieter.

There is a story in the Word of God in Luke chapter 18 verses 1–8 that speaks of this subject.  It is about a persistent widow and an unjust judge.  The judge didn’t fear God or man and for awhile he wouldn’t grant this widow her request. This widow would not take no for an answer, she just kept coming back with the same request, “grant me justice against my adversary.”  As time went on he was growing tired of this widow bothering him and he gave in to her request.

The widow was the “squeaky wheel,” so to speak, and the receiving of her request was the “grease.”

There is another story in God’s Word I want to tell you about, it also relates to this subject, it is found in Matthew chapter 20 verses 29–34.

This story is about two blind men who want to receive their sight.  These two blind men were sitting by the roadside maybe begging when they heard that Jesus was going by. These blind men had a choice, they could have been quiet and let Jesus pass by or they could try to get his attention. They chose the latter and shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us.”  They had become like the “squeaky wheel.” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet. Not so, no, it takes more than that to make a “squeaky wheel” quiet.  The more they were rebuked the louder they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us.”  Then what they might have thought would not happen, happened. Praise the Lord!  Jesus stopped and called them, “What do you want me to do for you He asked?”

They answered, “we want our sight.”  Guess what happened, the “grease” was applied to their lives, so to speak, because Jesus responded with compassion and touched their eyes and healed them and they followed Him.

Jesus wants to do the same thing for us, but we have to ask.  We need to become like the “squeaky wheel.”  And when you ask, don’t be like the little church mouse, bring your request to the throne of grace boldly.  Check out Hebrews chapter 4: verse 16 which says, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.”  There we will receive His mercy and we will find grace to help us when we need it.

When these two men wanted to be healed they shouted and they kept shouting.  Jesus wasn’t offended by their shouting, no what affected Jesus was their persistence and their boldness and their faith.

If there is something you want from the Lord, be like a “squeaky wheel.” Respectfully ask with boldness and faith and don’t be shocked when you receive it, no, just thank and Praise the Lord!

Have a great day.
