Do you feel like you have it all together?
Are you confident of yourself and the path you are on?
How successful have you been in the past going your own way and doing your own thing?
These are important questions to ask yourself. A man said to me the other day that he had more will power than anyone else. This would fall under self-confident thinking. Do you think Christians should be self-confident? The point I am trying to get across is that self-confidence is not a good thing, and I think it hinges on pride. When we add the word I to everything we do we are saying, in a way, that we can accomplish whatever we put our minds to and we don’t have to depend on anyone else.
Another thing that self-confident people do is that they boast about themselves; according to the Bible it says all such boasting is sin. How many times have you heard a Christian brother or sister say that they were going to go here or there or they were going to do this or that? I know in many cases it is just a habit that we Christians need to break.
What we need to get in the habit of doing is saying if the Lord wills we will do this or that or accomplish whatever we try to do. When we involve the Lord we have a far better chance of not being disappointed, if we fail at something, because we may try a lot of different things and it may not be the Lord’s will that we accomplish all of them. If we have given whatever it is our best try and we fail we can be pretty much assured that we need to move on to something else and not just keep spinning our wheels, so to speak. If it is the Lord’s will for your life He will equip you to do whatever it is so that you will bring glory to Him.
Did you ever hear someone else say that they wouldn’t be offended by this or that or tempted by things that you are tempted by, or maybe you have said it to someone else? Be very careful, there may be a test right around the corner that you may fail and cause you great disappointment and embarrassment and grieve the Lord!! I have heard it said, “But for the grace of God, there go I.”
There is a warning about self-confidence in James 4:13-16, “Look here, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.’ How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, ‘If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.’ Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.”
In verse 17 it tells us plainly “Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”
Now we know what we ought to do, let’s get in the habit of doing it. Praise God for His word of instruction. God bless you all and have a super day!
