Have you ever exaggerated about yourself, or about someone else? If you have, you have told a lie. And let me say this, there is no such thing as a white lie, a lie is a lie and we need to call it what it is, a lie, which is sin and not try to cover it up.
I have touched on this topic before but I think it needs repeating. Have you ever complimented someone just to make them feel good or to make yourself look good? I think a lot of lying goes on in a funeral home trying to make the one that has lost someone feel better, we lie meaning to encourage the person. There are times we lie to get out of a jam that we got ourselves into.
Lying seems to be an accepted behavior in our society. We hear lies constantly on TV, in movies and also on computers. Did you ever hear a chronic liar talk? You can’t believe anything they say. This reminds me of the story about, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” He said so many times that the wolf was coming that when the wolf did show up nobody would help him because he lied so many times before.
The Colossian church must have had this problem and it must have been severe enough to have Paul write about it to reprimand them about it. In Colossians 3:9 it says, “Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds.”
I think I know something that would help a lot of people in this area. What if we all had the same problem that Pinocchio had? Every time we lied our nose would get longer, we wouldn’t be able to walk around because we wouldn’t be able to get our noses around corners. I guess we could walk around with our heads facing up-wards but then we would be tripping over everything because we couldn’t see it.
This sounds like a joke but in all realty it isn’t. If lying is a problem with you, you need to stop it now, and kill this part of the flesh that has a grip on you immediately. You need to pray and repent and ask the Lord to forgive you and ask the Holy Spirit help you to live a life of honesty.
There is another sobering verse that I want to share with you before I end this lesson that needs no explanation, it is found in the book of Revelations 21:8 and this is what it says; “But cowards who turn away from me, and unbelievers and the corrupt, and murderers and the immoral, and those who practice witchcraft, and idol worshipers, and all liars, their doom is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.” This is a dire warning for all of us, something we cannot afford to ignore. We need to thank the Lord for telling us these things ahead of time so that we can deal with them before it is too late. Enough said, God bless you and may you have a great day.
